The proposal.

We are seeking to commemorate Collie and Mackenzie's climbing achievements by erecting a 1.5 x life size bronze sculpture of both men at Sligachan.

In addition to erecting  the sculpture, the group wishes to build a discreet car park which blends with the landscape, and which will also alleviate the current, on going, congestion problem in the layby close to the site.

The group also proposes to work with Scottish Hydro to remove four unsightly hydro poles which have stood for many years in and around the Sligachan area.

The Collie and Mackenzie Sculpture Group works in close collaboration with the John Muir Trust on whose land the sculpture will be situated. At the group's latest AGM, the following items which were adopted for the constitution outline the overall aims of the Collie and Mackenzie Sculpture Group.

  • To gain public appreciation of the achievements made by Collie and Mackenzie during their pioneering climbs of the Skye Cuillin.
  • To promote the value and connection of the local landscape, wild places and the Gaelic culture.

After almost three years of consultation and refinements to drawings and plans, the group's proposal was given planning permission in June 2006. The group is at present seeking to raise money from private and public sources to realise this exciting, culturally significant project.
